The Premier League have confirmed that Darren England will be the match referee for Brighton against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
Pep Guardiola and his players travel to the south coast hoping to get themselves back on track and to winning ways before the first international break of the season, having succumbed to a 0-2 home defeat to Tottenham last time out.
That defeat to Thomas Frank’s men was the ultimate humbler after a remarkable opening weekend rout at Molineux, in which City scored four times without reply from the hosts to go top of the Premier League table with the best result of matchday one.
The clash with Fabian Hurzeler’s men will be no easy task, with Pep Guardiola insisting during his pre-match press conference just how much of a difficult game it always is when City take on the Seagulls – regardless of the manager.
While the meeting with Brighton will be the final contest of the first portion of the brand new season, the game will also precede a crunch phase of Manchester City’s campaign with domestic up and UEFA Champions League duties returning in September and beyond.
But ahead of the meeting between Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester City, the Premier League have now announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the Amex Stadium!
Match Referee
The Premier League have confirmed that Darren England has been appointed to the role of on-field match referee for Brighton & Hove Albion against Manchester City at the Amex Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Interestingly, Manchester City have not lost a single match in which England has been appointed as the match referee, having been officiated by the 39-year-old Doncaster-born official nine times previously – winning all nine contests.
The last time Darren England took charge of Pep Guardiola’s side came last season as Manchester City secured a 2-0 home win against Leicester City, with goals scored by Omar Marmoush and Jack Grealish.
Assistant Referees
Operating from the roles of assistant referees on the south coast this weekend for the meeting between Fabian Hurzeler and Pep Guardiola will be Scott Ledger alongside Akil Howson, the Premier League have confirmed.
Video Assistant Referees
From the VAR Hub at Stockley Park, it has been announced that Paul Tierney will take on the role of Video Assistant Referee, supported by Assistant Video Assistant Referee Nick Greenhalgh.
Fourth Official
Taking on responsibilities between Fabian Hurzeler and Pep Guardiola’s respective dugouts this weekend will be the allocated fourth official for Brighton & Hove Albion against Manchester City, Simon Hooper.
