Paris Saint-Germain loanee Marco Asensio made his debut for Aston Villa in their 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup on Sunday at Villa Park.
Despite having won UEFA Champions League trophies with Real Madrid in the past and various domestic titles with the Spanish side and PSG, the move to arguably the best league in the world is a challenge for Asensio.
Asensio will stay with the Premier League side until the end of the 2024-25 season. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Aston Villa will cover his full salary until June, but there’s no option for a permanent transfer.
In addition, Duncan Castles provided some insight into Asensio’s move to Villa, revealing that the club turned down the chance to include a buy option for a key reason. Castles explained that Villa refused the buy option because PSG wanted a loan fee, and the club was hesitant to agree to it due to strict Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

While speaking to The Mirror, the three-time Champions League winner believes he can bring the small details to make a real difference.
“In big games, everything is based on small details,” Asensio said. “I know that from my own experience. But I also feel the manager and coaching staff have this experience too, especially in Europe. They transmit that in the way they prepare for games. We are on a good path.”
Despite Aston Villa coming back to the Champions League scene and wanting to contend for trophies domestically, Asensio doesn’t see it as a step backward going Real Madrid to PSG to the English side.
“We are trying to build something important,” Asensio said. “This is a really young team, with lots of young lads in the squad. The most experienced ones, we are going to bring our experience to these situations; there are a couple of new boys in the dressing room now, so we have to adapt quickly to get to know them.
“This isn’t a step backward. It’s a big challenge for me. I feel quite responsible because I feel like I’m bringing all the experiences I have, playing in these competitions and in these big games and I’m really happy to be here and play with this responsibility.”
