The Barclays Women’s Championship’s title race goes down to the final day as second-place Blues host the top of the table Pride at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park. Jocelyn Prêcheur’s London City Lionesses need just one point to secure promotion to the top-flight for the 2025/2026 season.
Speaking to WSL Full Time ahead of the final day showdown, London City Lionesses striker Goodwin coined the match to be ‘the biggest game of her life’.
“I think it’s huge,” Goodwin said. “I think for me personally, this is probably one of the biggest games of my career.
“Everyone wants to get promoted, that’s our goal, that’s what we want to do, we want to be in the WSL. I think for the first year in the project, we hope that we can do it. We have positive vibes going into it and I think we have the belief that we can do it.”
Birmingham City will be no pushovers, having taken a 2-1 victory from the reverse fixture at Hayes Lane. Goodwin packed on the praise for London City Lionesses’ title race opponents.
She said “I think Birmingham, they’re always a really good team. Whenever you come up against them, they’re going to put a shift in. I think, for me, at the start of the season, seeing that we had them last game of the season, I thought that probably would be a decider. They’re a really good team but hopefully, we can be better than them this weekend.”
Reflecting on the 2024/2025 campaign as a whole, Goodwin assessed how London City Lionesses have lived up to the expectations placed upon them as a result of the heavy investment that has been made by the club’s owners in the last 12 months.
She said “I think everyone thought we would probably just go in and sail this league but the Championship is such a big league and I think it’s getting better and better each year. The people that came into the club have made a difference and obviously, playing with world-class players week in and week out is great, it’s what you want to do.
“I love playing in the championship, I just have fun and I think that’s the main part of it. Hopefully, we can get it over the line.”
Crystal Palace’s relegation from the Barclays Women’s Super League was confirmed last Sunday following a 7-1 rout by Rehanne Skinner’s West Ham United. The result marks the second consecutive season that a newly-promoted side has faced immediate relegation, following Bristol City’s demotion in the 2023/2024 campaign. Goodwin is confident that if London City Lionesses are to secure promotion, they will be fit for the challenge.
She said “I was saying to some of the girls the other day that if we do go up, we will stay there. I think the owners will invest in some very good players and I think we’d be able to compete in there. For myself personally, I hope I would be able to compete in it as well. I think we have a very, very good chance [of competing] and hopefully, we can go on to win the WSL in the next few years, that’s the aim.”
Goodwin has had a stellar individual campaign in the Barclays Women’s Championship, netting 15 goals throughout the season. The striker reflected on her growth and hopes for the future as the possibility of promotion looms on the horizon.
She said “On a personal level, I think I have had a good season. Obviously, my job is to score goals and I’ve done that. I think it’s a team game and as long as I’m helping the team out, whether that be goals or assists, I’m happy. It’s about getting the three points at the end of the day.
“I’m really happy with this season and hopefully, I can do it in the WSL next season.”
London City Lionesses’ Barclays Women’s Championship fixture at Birmingham City kicks-off at 2.15pm this afternoon.
