Blues smashed a world record with victory against Cambridge United
Birmingham City owner Tom Wagner has reacted to the club smashing a world record in the wake of their 2-1 victory against Cambridge United.
Blues had already surpassed Reading's 106-point haul to accumulate the highest points total in English football history against Blackpool last Wednesday, before going global in their historic season, with 111 points surpassing totals previously hit by Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) and Japanese outfit, Verdy Kawasaki.
This means the West Midlands outfit have achieved the highest-ever points total across the world of football by a professional team in a single season.
Birmingham also hit the highest number of wins in an EFL season, going one better than Doncaster Rovers' class of 1946/47 courtesy of Christoph Klarer's first league goal for the club and a Kell Watts own-goal eight minutes from time, which were sandwiched either side of Shayne Lavery's first-half equaliser.
Wagner, as well as minority stakeholder and iconic NFL quarterback, Tom Brady, have been seen marking landmark occasions across Blues' 60-game campaign with plenty of messages on Instagram when present at games or watching from 'across the pond.'
This trend continued after the final day of the League One season, with the 55-year-old making a small reference to the "We're Birmingham City, we're in for a shock," chant that rang around St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park and plenty of away ends this term, with Blues making lightwork of the third-tier, something which clubs such as Sunderland, Leeds United, Sheffield United, Ipswich Town and Nottingham Forest have all previously failed to do at the first time of asking.
Posting on his Instagram story, Wagner stated: "Global record... what a "shocking" season...."
Blues were level with Red Star's points tally that was set just four years ago, whilst Verdy Kawakasi - now known as Tokyo Verdy - became the first team in professional history to smash 108 points back in the 1994/95 season.
Another club who have been in the spotlight this season in the third-tier are Wrexham, who finished some 19 points behind Birmingham at the season's end - the highest gap between 1st and 2nd in English football season.
The Red Dragons will also be preparing for Championship football for the first time in 45 years after setting their own history last weekend, becoming the first side to achieve three successive promotions, starting out in the National League.
Unsurprisingly, after hitting 111 points, Blues' official social media looked to reflect such history with a caption reading: "WE SWEAR YOU'LL NEVER SEE ANYTHING LIKE THIS AGAIN.
"CHRIS DAVIES' BIRMINGHAM CITY. RECORD BREAKERS."
In response to the tweet, Wrexham's own account looked to correct Blues, with Phil Parkinson's side also hitting 111 points back in 2022/23, as they ended a 13-year exile from the EFL, romping to the National League title, before Birmingham hit back with a tongue-in-cheek post of their own, reminding the North Wales outfit that this was achieved in non-league football.
Even before promotion had been announced, with Davies' side coasting towards an immediate Championship return, it became a hot topic of discussion to debate how the B9 club will fare after promotion.
Wagner hasn't shied away from the fact that club-record transfer fees are there to be broken once again after Jay Stansfield's permanent move last August, with FLW exclusively revealing a mammoth £30,000 per week contract offer for Peterborough's Kwame Poku is set to be put on the table after the Ghanaian's strong season despite being hit by injury for three months, whilst Che Adams has been linked with a return to his old club.
Phil Neumann will also join on a pre-contract from Hannover 96 whilst a permanent move for Kieran Dowell is reportedly being explored after it was already confirmed that Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Alfons Sampsted will become fully contracted to the club at next season's official start date.
