Liverpool have sold Luis Diaz to German champions Bayern Munich in a deal worth €75m (£64.7m).
The Colombia winger moves to the Bundesliga after three-and-a-half successful seasons at Anfield. Diaz was a key part of the club’s title success last season, scoring 13 goals in the Premier League, but has decided to take on a new challenge in Munich.
Following his departure, we rank the most expensive sales in Liverpool’s history.
After an exciting emergence as a teenage talent at Anfield, Raheem Sterling left Liverpool for Manchester City in 2015. Sterling had shone as part of the team that finished as Premier League runners-up in 2013/14, but a downturn in performances saw the winger push for an exit.
Manchester City made Sterling their record signing – and the most expensive English footballer – at the time of his switch to the Etihad. The move was a success for Sterling, who scored 131 goals in 339 games for the Citizens and won 10 major trophies.
Liverpool received a British transfer record fee for Fernando Torres when Chelsea spent £50m on the Spanish striker. On a remarkable deadline day in January 2011, Liverpool sanctioned the sale of Torres to West London, while reinvesting the funds in Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.
Torres had scored 81 goals in 142 games for the Reds but failed to replicate those performances at Chelsea. Though he won the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League in West London, he never again recaptured the form of his Liverpool best.
Luis Diaz has become the third-highest sale in Liverpool’s history. The Colombian expressed his interest in a new challenge this summer, with Bayern Munich making their move.
Diaz impressed over three-and-a-half seasons at Anfield, producing a series of electric performances down the left flank. The winger won an FA Cup and League Cup double in his first six months with Liverpool, before adding the Premier League title last season.
Having fought off interest from Arsenal a year earlier, Liverpool reluctantly sold Luis Suarez to Barcelona in 2014. Suarez had scored 31 league goals the previous season to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot, alongside a Player of the Year double. The Uruguayan’s relentless performances propelled Liverpool’s title charge, one which ultimately ended in an agonising runners-up finish.
After 82 goals in three-and-a-half years with Liverpool, Suarez signed for Barcelona in a £75m deal. He won a continental treble in his debut campaign in Catalonia and cemented his reputation as one of his generation’s greatest goalscorers. Only three players have scored more than his 198 goals for the Spanish giants.
Liverpool’s sale of Philippe Coutinho remains a Premier League record. Barcelona bid big for Liverpool’s ‘Little Magician’, agreeing a fee that could rise to £142m including add-ons.
Coutinho had emerged as one of the Premier League’s top talents at Liverpool, developing a reputation for spectacular moments. He won two La Liga titles with Barcelona but never came close to justifying the record outlay.
