It is the sort of clarity that rarely accompanies the summer transfer window, but Strasbourg president Marc Keller has delivered a direct message that has undoubtedly sparked conversations in the recruitment departments of both Leeds United and Aston Villa, as reported by Sports Mole.
Speaking to RMC Sport, Keller confirmed that captain Habib Diarra “should leave” this summer, citing a promise made to the 21-year-old two years ago. “When he extended his contract, we told him he was extending it, but that he wouldn’t leave until June 2025. So, if we get an attractive offer for him and for us, he could leave.”

That pledge has opened the door for Leeds and Villa, both of whom have tracked Diarra throughout a campaign that saw him register four goals and five assists in Ligue 1, and help Strasbourg reach the UEFA Conference League.
Diarra’s trajectory has been one of steady progression. From academy graduate to captain, and now a fully-fledged Senegal international, his influence on Strasbourg’s recent rise has not gone unnoticed.
His recent performance for Senegal against England at the City Ground was symbolic — not just in location for Leeds fans, but in stature. He scored, impressed, and added further weight to the growing belief that he is ready for a move to the Premier League.
In 102 appearances for the club, Diarra has recorded 11 goals and 10 assists. More than the numbers, it is his versatility, energy and maturity at such a young age that have impressed scouts and decision-makers alike.
With Strasbourg thought to be open to offers around €26 million (£22.17 million), Diarra’s valuation places him within range for both clubs. For Villa, European football might be the draw. For Leeds, the prospect of regular starts could be the selling point.

There is no clear frontrunner at this stage, but the expectation now is that talks will accelerate over the coming weeks.
Keller’s words were honest and refreshing, giving Diarra a dignified route out of the club and allowing Strasbourg to remain in control of the situation. It also signals to the market that Strasbourg’s most valuable asset is now very much available, for the right price.
For Leeds and Villa, the green light has been given. Now it is a question of who acts first.
Habib Diarra has everything a modern midfielder needs — composure on the ball, an engine that never quits, and the ability to influence games in the final third. Watching him against England was telling. He wasn’t overawed, he embraced the moment. That’s the mentality the Leeds supporters want at Elland Road as they prepare to return to the Premier League.
What excites fans most is the combination of youth and experience he offers. Over 100 senior appearances by 21, captain of his club, and a growing international profile. At around £22 million, it’s a move that shows ambition without risking everything on a gamble.
Yes, Villa can offer European football. But Leeds can offer Diarra the chance to be a central figure in a new project, to grow with the team and play week in, week out. If the club’s hierarchy are serious about building a squad capable of staying up and eventually pushing on, then Diarra should be near the top of the list.
