As Liverpool look ahead to a new campaign under Arne Slot, who made history by guiding the Reds to the Premier League title in his debut season, there’s a growing sense of expectation and renewal at Anfield. With a flurry of ambitious signings already completed and more to come, the message is clear: this is not a rebuild, it is a revival.
Among the many keen observers of Liverpool’s evolving project, few voices carry more weight than that of Kenny Dalglish. Speaking to This is Anfield, Dalglish offered his thoughts on the club’s new signings, in particular Florian Wirtz, who joins from Bayer Leverkusen in a British record-breaking £116 million move.
The signing of Florian Wirtz is a statement of intent. At just 22, the German attacking midfielder has been widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting prospects. For Dalglish, who has seen it all at Liverpool, the move is bold and full of promise.
“I’m sure he will approach it very positively,” Dalglish said. “I’ve not seen a great deal of him but he comes with very good references and you go with Arne’s judgement.”
There’s a humility in Dalglish’s words, but also trust in the process under Slot. He added, “Hopefully he will put smiles on a lot of people’s faces by the end of the season.” The underlying hope is that Wirtz will provide the creative spark to elevate an already dynamic squad.
Liverpool’s recruitment under Slot has been proactive and sharply focused. Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez bring both immediate quality and long-term potential, while Wirtz and soon-to-be-announced Hugo Ekitike add flair and unpredictability.
Dalglish acknowledged the nature of football’s uncertainty. “Sometimes you get a pleasant surprise [when a new player arrives], but it’s not a guarantee that everyone who comes in will be a success.” But there’s a confidence rooted in past experience: “No one that has come in that you regret bringing in. If there’s someone you blame it was me. It was never the player.”
It’s that sense of accountability, passed down through Liverpool’s leadership over the years, that still defines the club’s approach.
Pre-season has always been about more than fitness. It’s a time to build bonds and unity, something Dalglish believes is already happening.
“Pre-season is always good when you sign players. You’re staying in a hotel and they can spend as much time with each other, get to know each other and train with each other,” he said. “It’s not just about the players coming in but also the players that are already there. They’ve got to understand you and you’ve got to understand them but I don’t think that will be a problem because it’s a good group of players off the pitch too.”
This group, shaped by Slot and energised by recent success, is clearly primed for another title push. The foundation is strong and the dressing room is cohesive, with new arrivals welcomed into a culture that has proven resilient and ambitious.
With the Premier League crown already reclaimed and a new generation of talent bedding in, Liverpool are poised for another thrilling campaign. Wirtz may be the headline act, but it’s the collective effort, the vision of Arne Slot and the legacy upheld by figures like Kenny Dalglish that may define what’s next.
And if Dalglish is smiling, you can be sure the club is on the right path.
