Inter are expected to welcome Yann Sommer back onto the pitch in time for their ‘other’ Scudetto clash against Atalanta in March, but the Switzerland international will have to wear special protection upon his return according to Wednesday’s reports.
Inter have been without their first-choice goalkeeper for their last two matches after he went under the knife to fix the thumb that he fractured towards the end of last week.
Third-choice Raffaele Di Gennaro has also been out injured recently, which has left Josep Martinez as the only senior option between the sticks. He has kept clean sheets in a 1-0 win over Genoa and the 2-0 Coppa Italia quarter-final victory over Lazio on Tuesday.
The Nerazzurri have little time to celebrate their cup success, as they will be involved in arguably the biggest game of the 2024-25 Serie A season against title challengers Napoli on Saturday. There is one point separating the two sides ahead of kick-off.
Josep Martinez will start in goal again for the Partenopei clash, as Sommer requires several weeks more of recovery time.
Tuesday’s reports claim that the veteran goalkeeper is expected to return in time for Inter’s ‘other’ Scudetto clash against third-placed Atalanta on March 16.
La Gazzetta dello Sport specifies that Sommer will have to wear a specially-fitted brace on his return from his fractured thumb.
