Inter veteran goalkeeper Yann Sommer underwent a ‘successful’ surgery on a broken toe but won’t be available for a critical juncture. The reigning Serie A champions released an official statement to confirm the ex-Switzerland international went under the knife.

The operation was a success. After a period of rest, as agreed with Inter’s medical staff, Sommer will begin his rehabilitation phase next week,” the statement read.

Sommer has been indispensable between the sticks since replacing Andre Onana in the summer of 2023. Indeed, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has fielded the 36-year-old in all 25 Serie A games this season, keeping summer signing Josep Martinez on the bench.

However, Sommer will be on the sidelines for the upcoming clash against Genoa at Giuseppe Meazza. Furthermore, the Swiss star will miss the Coppa Italia quarter-final tie against Lazio, meaning Inter must rely on Martinez to advance into the semis.

Inzaghi’s headache stems from Sommer’s absence from a season-defining away game against Napoli. Inter will take on Antonio Conte’s charges in early March without their first-choice shot-stopper.

With two points separating the sides, Inter cannot afford a slip-up at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Sommer’s stint on the treatment table will test Inter’s resolve and potentially determine the fate of their season.

There’s also a chance he won’t be at Inzaghi’s disposal for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Feyenoord. Indeed, Inter will face the Dutch side in the next knockout round after they ousted Milan in the playoffs.
