Liverpool have confirmed the capture of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a deal worth £125 million, a fee that not only breaks the club’s transfer record but also sets a new British benchmark. The Swedish striker arrives as the Premier League champions’ new No.9, signing a long-term contract on deadline day after completing his medical at the AXA Training Centre.
Soon after finalising his move, Isak shared his delight with Liverpoolfc.com: “I feel amazing. It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.”
During three seasons at Newcastle United, Isak proved himself among the most clinical forwards in England’s top flight. Signed from Real Sociedad in 2022, he went on to score 62 goals in 109 appearances for the Magpies. His return of 54 goals in 86 Premier League matches is remarkable, and last season he hit 23 league goals, finishing just behind Mohamed Salah in the Golden Boot race.
That consistency made him indispensable to Newcastle, yet it also turned him into Liverpool’s prime target as Arne Slot looked to strengthen the champions for the defence of their title.
Now united with Salah rather than competing against him, Isak is clear about his ambitions. “I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well. I want to win everything. Yeah, [as simple as that].”
Liverpool’s record outlay underlines the club’s belief that he can deliver on that promise. With Slot already leading the Reds to the Premier League crown in his debut season, the addition of a forward at his peak is a statement of intent both domestically and in Europe.
Isak’s journey has been steady and calculated. He began at AIK in Sweden before moving to Borussia Dortmund in 2017. A loan spell with Willem II in the Netherlands showcased his potential and led to his successful stint at Real Sociedad, where he fired the Basque side to Copa del Rey glory in 2020. On the international stage, he has earned 52 caps for Sweden, scoring 16 goals, and remains the focal point of their attack.
Liverpool’s acquisition of Alexander Isak signals both ambition and continuity, a forward built for the present but also capable of shaping the club’s long-term future.
