Wednesday’s announcement of the Newcastle United 2025/26 Premier League fixtures (see below) has of course got everybody looking ahead across the next year, where our football lives will take us.
You have to play all teams home and away but it is a big positive if you can get your season off to the best of starts.
Newcastle United getting Aston Villa away and then Liverpool home, you have to say, the opening two weekends could have been a ‘little’ kinder.
I wanted though to take a special look, main focus, on how the newly released Premier League matches fit with the Champions League games Newcastle United will be playing.
These are the eight rounds of league matches in the Champions League for Newcastle United and how today’s Premier League fixtures fit around them (Obviously TV selections will see many NUFC Premier League games get moved by a day or two):
Champions League Matchday 1 (Tues 16, Wed 17 and Thur 18 Sept)
Sat 13 Wolves (H) and Sat 20 Bournemouth (A) are either side of our opening CL match, we can’t complain about those.
Champions League Matchday 2 (Tues 30 Sept and Wed 1 Oct)
Sat 27 Sept Arsenal (H) and Sat 4 Oct Nottingham Forest (H) are either side of CL match two, that looks a tough week. Though I think playing at home after a CL match must be preferable.
Champions League Matchday 3 (Tues 21 and Wed 22 Oct)
Sat 18 Brighton (A) and Sat 25 Fulham (H) are either side of CL match three, could be worse.
Champions League Matchday 4 (Tues 4 and Wed 5 Nov)
Sat 1 West Ham (A) and Sat 8 Brentford (A) are either side of CL match four, can’t complain about how that falls.
Champions League Matchday 5 (Tues 4 and Wed 5 Nov)
Sat 22 Manchester City (H) and Sat 29 Everton (A) are either side of CL match five, that could be a tough week.
Champions League Matchday 6 (Tues 9 and Wed 10 Dec)
Sat 6 Burnley (H) and Sat 13 Sunderland (A) are either side of CL match six, two of the promoted clubs. With so many Champions League matches, it was very likely Newcastle would get a game against Sunderland in close proximity to a CL match. My feeling on promoted clubs and especially when it is Sunderland where NUFC are concerned, far better to play them a few months into the season when they have been given plenty of harsh reminders of the gap in quality between the Championship and Premier League. So I am quite happy with the timing of this CL match, far better than playing the Mackems early on, when they would be full of adrenaline and at least have some hope of survival.
Champions League Matchday 7 (Tues 20 and Wed 21 Jan)
Sat 17 Wolves (A) and Sat 24 Aston Villa (H) either side of CL match seven and this is where it gets ‘interesting’, as you then look when CL match eight falls…
Champions League Matchday 8 (Wed 28 Jan)
Sat 24 Aston Villa (H) and Sat 31 Liverpool (A) either side of CL match eight.
So in a period of only a week and a half or so, you have a midweek CL 7 match, Villa at home on the weekend, the final midweek CL match 8, then Liverpool away at the weekend.
Hopefully Eddie Howe by this point has already guided Newcastle United to six wins in their opening six Champions League matches to ensure a top eight spot and qualification for the last 16, so we can concentrate on Villa and Liverpool in the Premier League at the end of January 2026!
