A look at the stake of minority shareholder and musician Ed Sheeran at Ipswich Town.
Ipswich Town are embarking upon a summer transfer window whereby they will seek to refine their squad ahead of launching a promotion challenge to get back into the Premier League next season.
The Tractor Boys have banked the riches of what top-flight football in England can bring, whilst also now being set to benefit from the parachute payments of relegation.
As well as that, the Suffolk-based outfit have already made a major sale this summer with Liam Delap joining Chelsea for a fee believed to be around £30 million.
Ipswich enjoyed back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship in the 2023 and 2024 under the management of Kieran McKenna, but as well as his excellent coaching, they have also been backed well by their ownership.
A part of the ownership is musician and boyhood Ipswich supporter Ed Sheeran, and Football League World has had a look at just how much of Ipswich he actually owns and just how strong his involvement in the club is.
In a club statement released by Town back in August 2024, it was confirmed that Sheeran had bought a minority stake in the club through Gamechanger 20 Ltd.
It was confirmed that Sheeran’s stake amounted to 1.4% and a part of the agreement would allow him to have long-term use of an executive box at Portman Road.
However, he is not a part of the board and therefore the decision-making process as it is a passive and minority investment in the East Anglians.
Sheeran has been involved in the club for a while now, having become the front of shirt sponsor for both the men’s and women’s teams back in 2021.
American investment group Gamechanger 20 Ltd are the controlling ownership group of Ipswich, with Sheeran a minority owner alongside ORC and Three Lions Group. They took control in April 2021.
Ipswich spent heavily in their two transfer windows in the Premier League, and, despite a fairly humbling relegation from the top-flight, appear in an excellent position to go again this time around.
They brought in some stars of previous Championship campaigns such as Jacob Greaves, Chiedozie Ogbene, Sammie Szmodics, Jack Clarke and Jaden Philogene.
Those additions, supplementing a squad that have already gained automatic promotion from the Championship in the recent past, will leave Ipswich in a good spot to be deliberate and specific in the summer transfer window with regards to their potential incomings.
They have had to endure some upheaval behind the scenes, though, with first-team coach Lee Grant, who joined McKenna’s coaching staff in the summer of 2022, departing to become the new manager of Huddersfield Town down in League One.
In terms of the playing personnel, the likes of Ben Godfrey, Kalvin Phillips, Jens Cajuste and Julio Enciso have returned to their parent clubs at the end of their respective loan spells, whilst Marcus Harness and Massimo Luongo have been released. Cameron Burgess rejected a new contract offer to join Preston North End on a free transfer.
