Liverpool's Tyler Morton would be a smart signing for Ipswich Town as they look to add midfield reinforcements.

Ipswich Town are back in the Championship, with the aim for Kieran McKenna and his side clear - they must return to the Premier League at the first attempt.

On paper, the Tractor Boys are well positioned to do just that. Unlike many relegated clubs, they won’t be ripped apart when it comes to retaining the bulk of their squad.

Of course, the departure of Liam Delap is a blow, and there is a possibility another big-name could move on.

However, there is still plenty of quality within the ranks at Portman Road, with the likes of Dara O’Shea, Jacob Greaves, Sammie Szmodics and Jack Clarke among those who have excelled in the second tier.

Ipswich Town will need to address midfield issue

Yet, some changes are needed, and along with a new striker, the most pressing issue for Ipswich comes in midfield.

Jens Cajuste’s loan spell has ended, and whilst there are talks about bringing him back, nothing is finalised, and there is speculation that Sam Morsy will depart after years of excellent service.

So, bringing in at least one midfielder is a priority, and McKenna will want an all-round player who can help Ipswich dominate the ball, which is likely in the Championship, and suit their high-intensity approach.

Tyler Morton would be a perfect fit for Ipswich Town in Liverpool loan deal

And, Liverpool's Tyler Morton is a player who fits the bill on that front, and he would be a sound investment for the Tractor Boys.

The 22-year-old has been highly-rated at Anfield, but he understandably is nowhere near the first-team, so he has been out on loan to get game time, with successful spells at Blackburn and Hull City in the past.

Morton’s time with the Tigers, when they just missed out on the play-offs under Liam Rosenior, was particularly impressive, and that form meant he was on the radar of Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and Atalanta 12 months ago.

His stock has dropped somewhat since then, and Middlesbrough were linked with Morton in the recent January window, but, once again, he stayed at Liverpool, clearing up injury issues in the second half of the season.

Those fitness issues, and the quality at Liverpool, mean Morton has effectively wasted a year, and he will be focused on getting back playing week in, week out.

At his best, Morton could flourish in the Championship once more. He is quick in possession, he looks to progress play, and he has the energy and aggression to win the ball back quickly. That’s why some high-level European clubs were tracking him, and it’s why he is part of the England U21 squad this summer.

Crucially, he also fits the profile of the type of player that Ipswich have targeted. Generally, they have brought in young, hungry players who want to develop and prove themselves in the game.

That applies to Morton, and he is someone who could feature for Ipswich in the Premier League if they get there, so he would be bought with the future very much in mind as well as the present.

Ultimately, Ipswich are planning for a short stay back in the Championship, but there are glaring problems with the XI that they must address if they are to bounce back immediately.

A new central midfielder is required, and Morton would be a statement signing that could help McKenna and Ipswich in the long-term.
