As Manchester City went down to a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Manchester United yesterday, you did get the sense that Pep Guardiola’s squad could do with some reinforcement in January. City’s play was laboured at the Etihad, especially in the final third. It does appear that the world champions could do with another attacking player to bring life to their play. With that in mind, a new report indicates that they may be planning a big move to add quality to their options up front.
Pete O’Rourke has reported for Football Insider that Manchester City could look to bring in Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia next month. Furthermore, O’Rourke adds that Napoli would demand ‘big money’ to sell the Georgian international next month. O’Rourke goes on to report that a new winger is one of Pep Guardiola’s transfer targets next month. Lastly, O’Rourke adds that Kvaratskhelia is a key target for Manchester City. He adds that he has been on City’s radar for several years now.
There is no doubt that Manchester City do need more quality up front. So far this season it has been Erling Haaland or bust for the world champions. Players such as Savinho, Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku haven’t added the goal threat that Pep Guardiola’s side traditionally gets from their wingers. Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden can also play on the right wing but they have been below their best so far this season. It is clear that the world champions need another quality attacking player. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia could be that player but signing him would be no easy task.
As O’Rourke reports Napoli would demand a sizable fee to sell the Georgian international. Kvaratskhelia remains one of their most important players. Typically Napoli are tough negotiators in the transfer market. But perhaps now is the time for City to make a mark in the transfer market. Kvaratskhelia as a player would immediately improve City’s attacking stocks. He is a quick and technical winger who can score goals. The Georgian international also has the eye for a pass which is something Pep Guardiola’s side needs.
If Manchester City are planning something big next month then a move for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia fits the bill. It would cost a pretty penny to land the Georgian international. But looking at City’s recent woes they do need a player like Kvaratskhelia. Now it remains to be seen if they will move for the Georgian winger next month. Based on O’Rourke’s report that could be a realistic possibility in a few weeks time.
