The agents of Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres have landed in London to finalise the forward’s transfer to Arsenal.
Arsenal are closing in on the signing of the Swedish striker after reaching an agreement in principle with Sporting.
After lengthy negotiations, the two teams have agreed on an initial guaranteed fee of €63.5m (£55m) and a further €10m (£8.6m) in potential add-ons. Gyokeres’ agents have also agreed to waive fees in order to facilitate the transfer.
Gyokeres has been determined to seal a Premier League transfer and refused to return to pre-season with Sporting to force a move.
The 27-year-old had become unsettled amid a view that Sporting had broken a gentleman’s agreement to sell him for an agreed fee this summer. A deal now appears imminent with Fabrizio Romano reporting the player’s agents are in London to seal the transfer.
The arrival of Gyokeres will end Arsenal’s search for an out-and-out centre-forward. Arsenal struggled to deal with the absence of the injured Kai Hvertz and Gabriel Jesus last season, ending a campaign without a player reaching 10 league goals for the first time since 1923/24.
Gyokeres has scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting over the last two seasons and has ended consecutive campaigns as the Primeira Liga’s top scorer.
He is set to return to English football after previous spells with Brighton, Swansea City and Coventry City. Both Coventry and Brighton will be entitled to a sell-on fee percentage as part of the forward’s transfer to Arsenal.
