Former Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes has expressed confidence in his former club, even as their season begins with mixed performances.

Morientes believes that Real Madrid’s history shows they have a knack for turning early challenges into major successes by the end of the season.

The ex-forward highlighted that the early months of the campaign are often a period of adjustment, with the real pressure coming in the later stages.

Real Madrid’s ability to go through tricky situations and still secure trophies has been a hallmark of their identity.

Morientes pointed out that while the team might not appear dominant now, the focus at this stage should be on evaluating the players and building momentum.

“I’ve seen critical situations in December that have ended in La Liga, in the Champions League… the critical situations are in April,” he said as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

He emphasised that their consistency in domestic and European competitions proves they can still contend for the biggest honours as the season progresses.

“The other day I heard Ancelotti say that the important thing is to be fighting for everything at this time of year. And in the Champions League, it’s the same.”

Morientes reassured fans that despite some doubts, Real Madrid remain well-positioned to challenge for trophies.

“This format is different and you can start to get into the swing of things. Right now we just have to evaluate players and later see how things turn out overall, but the Madridistas can rest easy,” he added.

Thoughts on Kylian Mbappe

When discussing Kylian Mbappe’s performances this season, Morientes acknowledged the immense expectations placed on the French forward.

With 12 goals already, Mbappe is having a strong campaign, but Morientes noted that his previous exploits have set an incredibly high standard.

He added that Mbappe’s best form is yet to come and remains confident that the forward will deliver when it matters most.

“He has 10 or 11 goals. I finished my first season at Real Madrid with 12 goals in total and I was the team’s top scorer. Mbappe’s problem is that he has spoiled us, but I’m sure his best form will come.”

Morientes also shared his thoughts on the top contenders in La Liga this season. He hopes for Real Madrid to secure the title but recognises the challenges posed by other strong teams.

While he wishes his former club Valencia could finish higher, he admitted they are currently struggling and need to focus on survival.

“I don’t know. I would like Madrid to win and Valencia to come second, but since Valencia is suffering, they should be saved.”

Meanwhile, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid remain strong competitors, while clubs like Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad are also impressing with their style of play and could contend for a top-four spot.

“The rest of the teams, Barcelona and Atletico, have an advantage, and then there is a bunch of very good teams in fourth. I like the way Athletic and Real play,” he added.
