Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has defended his actions after confronting head coach Nuno Espirito Santo following the club’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City.
Marinakis entered the pitch at the City Ground and appeared to remonstrate with Espirito Santo, after Forest dropped two points.
The draw dented the club’s hopes of Champions League qualification, though did secure European football for the first time since 1995. Forest have won just one of their last six in the Premier League to drop to seventh, having appeared set for Champions League qualification just weeks ago.
Marinakis has been criticised for his actions, with Nuno having led Forest to an unexpected season. Forest finished 17th last season and were among the pre-season favourites for relegation.
However, the Greek owner has defended his demonstration on the pitch and said it is ‘natural’ given his passion for the club.
“Today is a day for celebration, because after 30 years Nottingham Forest is now guaranteed to be competing on the European stage once again – a promise I made to our supporters when we achieved promotion!” Marinakis said.
“With two more games to go in the Premier League, we must keep believing and keep dreaming, right to the final kick in the final game. We are extremely proud and close to Nuno and the team, and we must all celebrate the historic achievements of this season.
“Everybody – coaching staff, players, supporters and including myself – we were frustrated around the injury of Taiwo and the medical staff’s misjudgment on Taiwo’s ability to continue the game.
“This is natural, this is a demonstration of the passion we feel for our club. Let’s all be grateful, passionate and keep on dreaming!”
