With Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s patellar tendon tear, FC Barcelona are left without their most trusted player between the sticks. The Catalans have some other promising options for this role, but the German was their most experienced player for this position.
Iñaki Peña started in goal for the last two matches, but in the recent game against Osasuna, he conceded four goals. While much of the blame can be attributed to defensive lapses, there’s no denying that this performance has left a blemish on Peña’s record.
Thus, this last game can particularly hurt the Spanish goalkeeper’s chances of remaining the team’s starter for the time till Ter Stegen returns. This is particularly the case as the Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is getting closer to a move to Barcelona, and recent reports on his move claimed that he was already in the Catalan city to complete his move.
The latest update on this transfer is provided by the trusted journalist Fabrizio Romano, who claims that the former Juventus shot-stopper is already undergoing medical tests at the Blaugrana club at this moment in time.
Once he passes these medical tests, his joining Barcelona would almost be as good as confirmed. However, he might not yet be ready to take to the field right away, as it should be remembered here that the Pole had retired after playing for Poland in the UEFA EURO 2024, and has not played professionally since his side’s elimination in that competition.
Thus, his first appearance for Barcelona might not come before the next international break even if he completes the move in the coming few hours. In such circumstances, Pena will get two more opportunities against Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League and against Alaves in La Liga to regain his form and show he can compete with Szczesny for a starting spot.
