Despite strong criticism from Danish media following his recent Nations League game against Portugal, boss Brian Riemer has chosen to continue supporting the 38-year-old goalkeeper.

Having debuted for his national team in 2013, the experienced Hoops goalkeeper has earned 113 caps for Denmark and participated in four major international competitions.

Schmeichel will be aiming to forget Saturday’s frustrations at Hampden, where a huge error on his part allowed Shayden Morris’ cross to result in Aberdeen’s equalising goal, as the Celtic keeper inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net.

Unable to stop any of Aberdeen’s spot-kicks in the shoot-out, Schmeichel saw Celtic’s treble ambitions for the 2024/25 season come to an end. Nevertheless, the Danish keeper has had an impressive debut season, featuring in 49 matches across all competitions since joining as a free agent last summer.

Having recorded 24 clean sheets whilst only conceding 47 goals, the ex-Leicester City skipper signed a one-year contract extension mid-season, securing his place at the club through until next summer.

Former Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley has also been included in the Denmark squad, despite experiencing an inconsistent campaign with Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 24-year-old, with only two caps for his country since his debut in 2022, found the net from the penalty spot in Sunday’s 4-1 victory over Europa League champions Tottenham Hotspur, now led by his former Celtic manager, Ange Postecoglou.

After impressing with Brondby and shining for Denmark’s U21s, long-time Celtic target Mathias Kvistgaarden has earned his first call-up to the senior national team.
