Chelsea’s €113m nightmare likely to continue for another year at least

While we’re all focused on the Euros and striker which Chelsea could sign, it’s easy to forget there’s one on the books which they need to get rid of.

It’s the same old song and dance every summer at the moment – the eternal question about how on earth they get rid of Romelu Lukaku and his vast wages.

The striker is at the Euros now, missing chances for Belgium, but once that tournament is over, shedding him (hopefully permanently) will become priority.

There are teams interested – there always are. But none can ever take him off us permanently. The sporting directors are going to have their work cut out finding somewhere to park him for another year as he crawls towards the end of his contract.

His value (according to Transfermarkt) is down to just €30m, but that’s still way beyond what sides are willing to pay. Once again, a clever formula will be needed.

What’s next for powerful forward

CaughtOffside today claim that AC Milan are in the mix for Lukaku, which would be fun to see. Having already played for Inter and Roma, the Belgian could continue his tour of the peninsula.

But as is always the problem with Lukaku, these Italian sides can only afford a loan. His wages are too vast and Chelsea won’t sell for a sum low enough to make him affordable. There’s talk of a loan with an option to buy, but Chelsea know that unless they make that option very cheap, they’re going to be having this problem again in a year’s time. At that point, he will have just one year left on the nightmare contract that’s killed us for so many seasons now.

There is reported interest from Saudi Arabia too, but the 31 year old still seems keen to keep playing in Europe.
