We’ve already covered Roberto Di Matteo’s comments about Chelsea’s striker situation and where they can add and improve ahead of next season.
But the former Blues boss also noted another weakness in Enzo Maresca’s team – in goal. In quotes picked up by the Metro, Di Matteo noted that that was another position currently holding his former side back:
“I’d also look at the goalkeeper – that’s been an issue for Chelsea in the last couple of seasons, so maybe an experienced goalkeeper, with a big personality, who can come in and have an immediate impact on the back four.
“That’s very important; that there’s a trust from your defenders to the goalkeeper, and vice versa. For me, there’s one name at the top of my mind who has those attributes… Emi Martinez, from Aston Villa. He’s at the right age now, he’s won titles, he’s a big personality.”
There’s no doubt that Martinez would be a dream signing for this team. If he was 18 and playing in Brazil, we’re sure we would have signed him up already.
The problem is that he’s playing for a real contender, and would cost us a vast amount even if he did want to join us.
Di Matteo’s comments about the relationship between defence and goalkeeper are also spot on. Part of the reason that almost every defender being slotted into this team in the last couple of years has looked worse than they should (or how they looked at their last team) is the lack of confidence in goal.
Some blame can also go to the defenders for not helping out their keeper at times, but in general it’s a lack of confidence radiating out from between the posts that’s the root cause of conceding soft goals.
