Carney, you’re back in Dortmund. How does it feel to officially be a Borussia Dortmund player?“It feels great. Over the past few months, I’ve got to know the club, the players and the fans. It’s a blessing that the permanent transfer makes me feel even more part of the team. I can’t wait to help the team, the club and the fans realise our dreams.”
How happy are you that all the formalities are now complete and you can look forward to being back on the pitch?“That’s always the tedious part, the formalities, the medical examinations and so on. I’m glad that’s done now and I can fully commit myself here. I hope I’ll get some playing time soon.”
You made a strong impression during your loan spell last season. What convinced you that Dortmund is the right place for your long-term development?“I think it was the trust that Sebastian Kehl and the head coach have shown in me over the last few months since the Club World Cup. The environment, the players, the culture – all these things played a big part. And of course, the time I spent here in the second half of last season also helped a lot. I enjoyed my time here. So yes, I’m very happy.”
In your last interview with BVB TV, you told us about your special connection with Serhou Guirassy. How much are you looking forward to playing with him again?“I saw him earlier – he was one of the first people I saw after my return. We’re both very happy. I can’t wait to give him a few assists – but he has to give me some too. But I’ll give him more, God willing.”
What personal and team-related goals have you set yourself for the coming season?“As far as team goals are concerned, I definitely want to help the team win a trophy. I want to take Dortmund back to where we know the club belongs and where it should be. Personally, I just want to be the best version of myself. I want to play every game with all my heart.”
