Following last year's inaugural season with the new format, 36 teams will once again battle it out in the league stage of the 2025/26 Champions League season for a place in the knockout phase. The draw will take place on Thursday, 28 August in Monaco. As was the case last year, the draw will be supported by software that automatically and randomly determines the pairings.
Borussia Dortmund are in the first of four pots this year due to their UEFA coefficient. In the group stage, Borussia will face eight different opponents in four home and four away matches. These will consist of two teams from each of the four pots. There will be no German opponents in the first stage of the competition. In addition, a maximum of two opponents from the same country are permitted.
You can find out which eight opponents BVB will face in the group stage on Thursday evening from 18:00 CEST live on the BVB Twitch channel and on Sky Sport News, among others. The first matchday in the Champions League will take place in just three weeks, between 16 and 18 September.
For seven teams, participation in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League will only be decided on Wednesday evening in the second leg of the play-off round. The final allocation of the pots will take place once the entire field of participants is complete. Tottenham Hotspur and PSV Eindhoven have already qualified. They will be allocated to the pots after the play-off matches.
An overview of the possible opponents:
Following their 1-0 victory over Rot-Weiss Essen, BVB have advanced to the second round of the DFB-Pokal. The Black & Yellows' opponents for this round will be drawn on Sunday (31 August) at 19:00 CEST, parallel to Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga match against 1. FC Union Berlin (kick-off at 17:30 CEST).
The second round matches will be played between 28 and 29 October 2025. The draw will be broadcast live on Sportschau at 19:00 CEST. Former referee Felix Brych will take charge of the draw..
There will be two pots, one for pro teams and one for semi-pro teams. The draw will first be made from the semi-pro pot and then from the professional pot. If there are no more balls left in one pot, the remaining teams from the other pot will be drawn against each other. The first team drawn will have home advantage.
