France are on the brink of elimination from the 2024/25 Nations League after losing 2-0 to Croatia in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.
Kylian Mbappe’s return was meant to be a boost, but Les Bleus looked disjointed and second-best despite his presence in the team.
Mbappe had six attempts on goal, yet France rarely threatened. By contrast, Croatia were clinical.
Ante Budimir’s opener may have been scrappy, but Ivan Perisic’s half-volley before the break was a moment of pure quality.
Mike Maignan’s penalty save spared France from an even bigger deficit, but there was little else to cheer. This is not unfamiliar territory for Didier Deschamps’ side.
They have failed to win any of their last three Nations League matches after conceding first, and their recent home record in the competition is worrying.
Two wins from six in front of their own fans suggest the Stade de France is no fortress.
Croatia have reason to be confident heading into the second leg. They have now beaten France twice in a row after failing to do so in their first nine meetings.]
Their last trip to Paris ended in a 1-0 win, and they will arrive knowing one goal could kill the tie.For France, everything hinges on Mbappe. The Real Madrid star has been in sensational club form, scoring 20 La Liga goals this season.
However, international football presents a different challenge. Croatia’s compact defence frustrated him in the first leg, and they will aim to do the same again.
If Mbappe is to drag France back into the tie, he needs help. Ousmane Dembele was ineffective, and the midfield lacked urgency.
Deschamps must find a way to inject intensity and creativity, or this comeback will be over before it begins.Croatia will sit deep and wait for their chances. France must break them down without leaving themselves exposed. This is a fine balance that will test Deschamps’ tactical acumen.Mbappe has delivered on the biggest stage before. If he does not do so again, France’s Nations League campaign will be over.
