Burnley doubled their money in a year on a French teenager who's already gone on to win silverware since leaving Turf Moor.

Burnley hit a transfer jackpot in 2024, doubling their money on a young player in Wilson Odobert, who was still very much making his way early in his career.

Promotion back to the Premier League in 2023 meant a summer of squad strengthening for Burnley. They'd just won the Championship at a canter, running up 101 points and finishing a massive 21 points clear of third-placed Luton Town, but with the gap between the Premier League and the Championship wider than ever and still apparently growing, there was still work to be done.

And Odobert would go on to have a highly successful season with the Clarets, despite their relegation at the end of that season, earning himself a big money transfer which not only pushed him towards the elite level of the English game, while also earning his club a substantial profit for their troubles.

Odobert was one of the bright spots in a disappointing season for Burnley.

Odobert was a product of the youth academy at Paris Saint-Germain, but turned down the offer of a professional contract with them in January 2022 to go to Troyes to start his senior career there instead. With 32 appearances in Ligue 1 for them, he was successful enough to start drawing a lot of attention from overseas.

But it was Burnley who moved first for him, paying a reported €12 million (£10.1 million) to take him to Turf Moor ahead of their return to the Premier League. At the start of October, he marked his first Premier League start for them by scoring his first goal for the club in a 4-1 defeat at Chelsea, becoming their youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer in the process. He ended the season with 29 appearances and three goals for them.

This wasn't enough to spare Burnley relegation from the Premier League. They spent the entire season in the relegation places and finished 19th. And he stayed through to the start of the following season, even scoring in their first Championship game of the 2024/25 season, away to Luton Town.

Despite injuries, Odobert made good progress Spurs during 2024/25

Four days after scoring this goal, though. Odobert was on his way to North London. The Sun reported the transfer as having gone "from rumour to confirmed in a matter of minutes" on a five-year contract for a fee reported to have been £25 million plus add-ons.

Since then, despite injuries which left him sidelined from September to February, he has demonstrated his value to Spurs. He still managed to fit in 16 Premier League appearances despite his injury problems, and scored twice for them in their Europa League Round of 16 game against AZ, although he didn't get off the bench for their win in the final against Manchester United.

Burnley, meanwhile, ran up another three-digit points tally as they returned to the Premier League in second place behind Leeds United. Having more than doubled their money on what they'd paid for him just a year earlier, they didn't look as though they missed him at all and will, very much, reflect on a £25m deal that saw them double their money as good business.
