It’s quite the coincidence. Just this morning we were noting that there was a strange silence when it came to goalkeeper.

While striker, centre back and left winger all seem to be very much in hand, with strong links to a few options in each and deals seeming to progress on multiple fronts, it’s been very quiet in terms of goalies.

Robert Sanchez had a decent run to end the season, but that shouldn’t fool anyone – he remains a major weak point in this squad, and we won’t win a league with him as first choice.

Maignan’s Milan contract expires a year from now, meaning he has suddenly become affordable now his club will be forced to listen to offers rather than potentially lose him for free.

World class Maignan could be a game changer for Chelsea.

AC Milan are in a real mess right now, and Maignan should be hitting the best years of his career. After years of loyal service, it makes sense that this might be a good moment to jump ship and try something new.

As for Chelsea, while they’ve been focused on a youth first policy, it’s been briefed many times that they’re willing to break their own rules in exceptional cases, and this could be one.

Maignan would not only instantly be a huge upgrade to the first team in a vital position, and one we’re weak in, but would also bring a wealth of experience and leadership to a young group.

It remains to be seen if this is just a ploy by his agents to get Milan to increase their offering, but we’re hopeful enough to believe it.
