Manchester United’s forward coach Benni McCarthy is reportedly set to part ways with the club when his current contract expires at the end of the month.

McCarthy arrived at United in 2022 following the appointment of Erik ten Hag as club boss.

During the 2022/23 season, McCarthy earned widespread praise from fans and the media as he was credited with the turnaround in the form of Marcus Rashford, who plundered a career-high 30 goals across all competitions that term.

The South American is a deeply popular figure within the squad, the evidence of which could be seen in just how the players celebrated with him after the club’s triumph over Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley in May.

McCarthy has previously made no secret of his intentions to pursue a managerial career, well away from the limelight at United.

The former striker has been linked to Kaizer Chiefs and is also believed to be on the radar of MLS clubs.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Ten Hag requested the club to hand McCarthy a new deal to extend his stay at Old Trafford beyond the current month.

However, with the imminent incomings of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake – both of whom are poised to become the latest additions to Ten Hag’s backroom staff – it appears that there is no longer a place at the club for McCarthy.

According to Andy Mitten of The Athletic, “Manchester United’s Benni McCarthy will leave his position as a first-team coach when his two-year contract expires at the end of this month.”

“It’s understood that the lifelong United fan wants to be a manager again. McCarthy had a positive relationship with many of the United players and enjoyed his time at Old Trafford.”

“He played a key part in the club’s two trophies in two years and leaves the club with their respect and thanks.”

United’s coaching reshuffle is unlikely to end with McCarthy. It’s understood that there’s also a strong chance that Mitchell van der Gaag could leave the Red Devils very soon.

Like McCarthy, Van der Gaag is thought to be eager to chart his own course as a manager.
