Long linked with Arsenal, Nico Williams appeared to be set to join Barcelona this summer. The player’s decision to prioritise the Catalan club convinced the Gunners to look elsewhere, and it seemed just a matter of time until a transfer was confirmed.
Yet in a twist, Athletic Club have now confirmed that the winger has instead opted to extend his contract to stay where he is.

Athletic Club have announced that Williams has signed a new 10-year deal to 2035, and they add that his release clause has increased by more than 50%.
“When I have to make decisions, for me, what weighs most is the heart,” Williams said in the announcement video. “I am where I want to be, with my people. This is my home. Aupa Athletic!”
In addition to his clear signal of intent to stay, Williams’ new release clause now certainly puts him beyond Arsenal’s financial capabilities this summer.
Williams’ old clause was relatively affordable, but the player’s salary demands made things difficult. Athletic Club’s unique situation means they spend next to nothing on transfers, and are therefore able to offer much higher salaries than you’d expect for a club of their size.

With Williams’ wages going up even further and his affordable release clause becoming much less reasonable, there’s little chance of a move to Arsenal even in future transfer windows.
The player is now committed to the club who first gave him a chance in the professional game.
