Fabio Vieira has finally made his first appearance for FC Porto since joining on loan from Arsenal on deadline day.

After recovering from an injury that delayed his debut, Vieira came off the bench in Porto’s 4-0 win against Arouca, marking his return to action.

Vieira’s introduction was met with a thunderous ovation from the Estádio do Dragão crowd when he was called upon by Porto’s manager Vítor Bruno with the team leading 3-0.

Playing the last 21 minutes, Vieira managed 16 touches, including two in Arouca’s box, and had one shot on target. However, his performance was a mixed bag, as he lost both of his duels, attempted (and failed) just one dribble, and tried a single long ball that didn’t reach its target.

Speaking to a packed stadium after the game, Vieira expressed his joy at returning, stating: “I feel happy. This is where it all started. I will give my all throughout the season to help this great club achieve its goals. I am sure you will be an extra element in achieving this.”

Arsenal completed Vieira’s loan move to Porto at the end of August, but the midfielder was unable to play in Porto’s matches against Sporting CP, Farense, and Vitesse Guimarães due to injury.

O Jogo reported that Porto paid Arsenal a fixed fee of €890,000 for the loan, with an additional €710,000 potentially payable based on performance-related variables.

The deal did not include an option for Porto to make the transfer permanent, indicating Arsenal still view Vieira as part of their long-term plans.

Vieira’s loan to Porto provides him with the chance to regain form and confidence in a familiar environment, with the Portuguese midfielder under contract with Arsenal until 2027.

Arsenal’s decision not to include a purchase option suggests that the club hopes he will use this loan to gain valuable minutes and experience, potentially returning to North London next summer in a stronger position. This arrangement ensures Vieira gets consistent game time, while Porto takes full responsibility for his wages during the loan spell.

The deal represents a significant investment for Porto, and it could be even more costly should they win the Portuguese league, triggering an additional €710,000 payment.

Additionally, Porto paid a €290,000 fee to Gestifute, the agency of Vieira’s agent Jorge Mendes.

If Vieira does not participate in at least 50% of Porto’s matches, penalty clauses may also be activated, further underlining the expectation of regular playing time. Arsenal will be closely monitoring his progress throughout the season to assess whether he fits into Arteta’s future plans or if a permanent transfer might be on the cards next summer.

For now, Vieira’s goal is to stay fit and contribute significantly to Porto’s campaign. Both clubs hope the loan will prove mutually beneficial, with Porto aiming for domestic success and Arsenal expecting Vieira to develop into a more accomplished player. Vieira’s next few months at Porto will be crucial in determining whether he returns to Arsenal as a key player or as a potential transfer candidate in the future.
