Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has insisted he never wanted to leave St James' Park following a summer of intense speculation on his future.

When Newcastle needed to raise money to avoid financial sanctions, Liverpool agreed a £75m deal to sign the former Everton youngster, which would have had Joe Gomez moving in the opposite direction for £45m, but Newcastle ultimately pulled the plug when the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh raised the required funds.

Gomez recently insisted he had no desire to leave Liverpool during the summer, and now Gordon, who saw the uncertainty rumble on for several more weeks, has hit out at claims he wanted to leave Newcastle.

"I'd heard so much talk this year about my future, where I'm going, where I want to go without anyone actually asking me," Gordon told Sky Sports News.

"Just leave me to play football, I just want to be happy, play football. I love it here [at Newcastle], I've said it plenty of times, I think with the speculation, people assume it is all correct when you've never heard from me once that I am unhappy at this place. I love everyone here. I love playing football here. That was all that was."

Reaffirming his love for Newcastle once again, Gordon confessed the relentless speculation took its toll on his performances.

"It took me away from enjoying my football this year, and I think that is sort of where the inconsistencies comes from, because I've got caught in that a little bit," he admitted. "But I just want to play football, especially for Newcastle.

"I'm only 23. All I've heard is 'When he is leaving?' Who said I was ever going to leave? I'm very, very happy here, I love this place, I love playing football here and I think probably Bruno [Guimaraes] and Alex [Isak] think the same thing.

"But we're all young, we're all human beings, so if people are talking about that, it sort of questions our character. It's hard."
