Ajax’s hopes of a second place finish appear to be over in spite of a win against Utrecht on Sunday.
Scorers: Bergwijn 20′, Brobbey 68′, Klaassen 90+3′; Douvikas 49′
Steven Bergwijn grabbed the only goal of the first half when he collected a pass from the left and was afforded too much time and room to drive into the area and pick out the bottom corner of the net.
But moments after half-time, they were pegged back moments after half-time when Anastasios Douvikas levelled for Urecht.
However, with news from elsewhere that PSV were trailing and opening the door to second for Ajax, they responded to retake the lead when Mohammed Kudus headed back across goal for Brian Brobbey to steer home from close range.
Davy Klaassen wrapped things up with a third in injury-time.
Unfortunately, a late fightback from the hosts in Eindhoven from 3-1 down to 3-3 means it is now extremely unlikely that there will be Champions League football in Amsterdam next season unless AZ do them a big favour next week and they win their own final game.
