Vincent Kompany will manage Manchester City “sooner or later” according to current manager Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City were drawn against Vincent Kompany’s Burnley in the Emirates FA Cup quarter-finals in midweek, with the Belgian coach set to return to the Etihad Stadium, the club where he spent 11 years – making 360 appearances and winning 12 trophies including four Premier League titles.

Kompany’s Burnley look set for an immediate return to the top-flight, as the Clarets edge closer towards promotion after an incredible Sky Bet Championship campaign.

The former Manchester City captain replaced Sean Dyche at Turf Moor in the summer, leaving Belgian Pro League side RSC Anderlecht, who he joined upon departing City in 2019.

Pep Guardiola penned a new two-year contract extension with City in November having joined from Bayern Munich in 2016.

The Catalan coach has led City to four Premier League titles in five years, and despite being contracted at the club until 2025, has hinted that Kompany could succeed him at the Etihad Stadium.

“Sooner or later he will be manager of Man City, but I am not sure when,” declared the 52 year-old.

“I have not spoken to him about it. It is my feeling, maybe I am wrong. His work ethic, knowledge of the game, a lot of respect, experience doing what he has done is so difficult and he is doing it really, really well.

“He knows the club, the environment, our fans and what our people need. The destiny is there.”

“He will be back sooner or later, so I think his destiny is to become a manager of Man City it is written in the stars. It is going to happen I don’t know when but it will.”

Burnley will face City in the FA Cup quarter-finals later this month, with Kompany having been apart of the Manchester City squad which won the competition in 2019.

Discussing the upcoming tie against Burnley, Guardiola praised the Clarets’ recent performances.

“I am impressed with the consistency, Championship is difficult for the amount of games. The consistency so far, it is unbelievable.

“They are close to promotion again to the Premier League next season and I am delighted for him personally for his success at Burnley.

“I think all of us as fans will be happy for him to be back. Of course it is the quarter finals of the FA Cup it is an incredible chance to reach the semi finals at Wembley and we will try to compete against Vini and his team.”
