Midfielder Davide Frattesi must become more adept in possession to earn the trust of Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, on how the 24-year-old can secure more playing time for himself.

Inter are likely to have to rely on Frattesi a fair bit for the next few matches.

Midfielder Nicolo Barella will miss the Nerazzurri’s next few matches before the October international break.

Therefore, Nerazzurri coach Inzaghi will turn to Frattesi as a fairly like-for-like backup for Barella in the central trio.

This will be one of the first times that Frattesi is a regular part of the Inter starting eleven.

To date, coach Inzaghi has used the former Sassuolo midfielder as more of a super sub than a starter.

In his substitute appearances, Frattesi has certainly shown what he is capable of.

Particularly with his goalscoring, the Italian international has managed to be decisive for Inter.

But Inter coach Inzaghi does not just want a player who can have that sort of impact in midfield.

The Nerazzurri coach has built his 3-5-2 formation around the work of the three midfielders.

For Inter in the past few seasons, that has been Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Nicolo Barella.

That central trio has guaranteed Inter a stable base in possession.

And it is exactly that which Frattesi has never quite guaranteed the Nerazzurri.

The 24-year-old is a very dynamic player. But he seems to lack a certain ability to slow the tempo of matches down.

Inzaghi wants his midfielders to know when and where to receive possession, and the move the ball not just directly but intelligently and efficiently.

That is a side to Frattesi’s game that the Italian international will have to show if Inzaghi is to make him a regular part of the starting eleven.
