HLN and Spanish Radio stations SportDirect and Marca Malaga are reporting that 18-year-old forward Antonio Cordero is to join Westerlo on loan. The teenager was signed by Newcastle United last winter from Spanish side Málaga. Cordero can play either out wide or up front and has yet to make a first team appearance in England, having been a regular for Málaga.
After losing their opening game 5-2 against Anderlecht, it seems strange that Westerlo are looking to sign another attacking player. The squad is currently full in that area, and considering how poor they have been defensively, where Cordero will fit or get game time is questionable. Clearly, the side need to begin a clear out in the attacking department of players that they do not see as part of their long term future.
Newcastle United will certainly hope Westerlo clear up the back log in attacking positions so that Cordero can get valuable game time. Tottenham’s Alfie Devine spent time on loan at Westerlo last season and was able to make 32 appearances in Belgium, scoring six goals and grabbing one assist.
