Spurs were Adobe Women’s FA Cup finalists for the very first time. The Lilywhites also got out of their group in the Subway Women’s League Cup.
The North Londoners find themselves in this season’s Subway Women’s League Cup quarter-finals. Spurs have a home tie against West Ham United this evening.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Spurs boss Vilahamn said that his side are hungry to reach another domestic cup final off the back of last season’s experience.
“We’ve had good cup runs since I arrived at the club,” Vilahamn said. “We’ve had a quarter-final and a final last year and now, we are in the quarter-finals of the League Cup again.
“We have got the taste for reaching finals and we want to compete for trophies. Obviously, it’s a great game at home against West Ham. We really want to reach the final, so we are going to start with a really good performance against West Ham.”
Vilahamn has won all three of his games against West Ham United so far but every fixture has been a rollercoaster. The Spurs boss is expecting another choatic game when the two rivals meet this evening.
He said “I have a good record but I think all of the games have been really tough, they’ve been really competitive, good fights. I think this game will be similar.
“We are not really there yet where we shine all game and find the right decisions, we are still in a place where we are trying to get to know each other a little bit more.
If we have a good spell in the game and make sure that we score more than one goal, we will probably be in a position like what we were against Crystal Palace in the first game [of the season]. Normally, we still have dips in the game which makes it a little bit stressed and inconsistent.
“We are still on a journey where we have got to be a little bit more consistent and try to win by more than one goal. On the other hand, we are now winning games and defending much better.
“I am happy where we are but I still think we can look a bit better on the ball and how we break down the opponent.”
If the two sides cannot be separated in normal time, extra-time and penalties may be required. Vilahamn explained that practicing penalties isn’t something that appeals to all of his players.
He said “We have some practices for players who want to have that but actually, some players don’t want to have it.
“There are a lot of good studies on what makes you have a better chance to win, how you celebrate goals, how you act before you put the ball down [on the spot]. Of course, you try to be clever but when it comes down to those games; last season, we saw Amy James-Turner go up and score that goal and she’d never taken a penalty in her life. It’s also about the situation and who is actually willing to be the hero.
“I hope we can win before it gets that far but it’s always fun for the fans to see penalties.”
Tottenham Hotspur’s Subway Women’s League Cup quarter-final tie against West Ham United kicks-off at 7.30pm this evening.
