Birmingham City are being linked with the signing of Rennes forward Kyogo Furuhashi this summer.

According to Japanese outlet Sponichi Annex, the Blues are "likely" to complete the signing of the 30-year-old, with Kyogo himself "positive" over the prospective transfer.

The Midlands outfit are preparing for life back in the Championship after clinching the League One title with a record 111 points.

Chris Davies will be hoping to immediately make the team competitive at the top end of the second tier, with Birmingham’s sights on a return to the Premier League.

When asked for his thoughts on this potential move, FLW’s Birmingham fan pundit Jason Moore claimed he is 100 per cent behind it.

He believes it shows a statement of the club’s intent, and is very excited by the prospect of the Japan international joining the club despite his underwhelming and brief stint at Rennes.

“If we were to go and get him from Rennes, 100 per cent that’s a statement signing, that’s massive,” Moore told Football League World.

“And if you’re scoring goals in the SPL, I’ve always thought the SPL and the Championship were a similar type of quality, only for Rangers and Celtic anyway.

“That’s 100 per cent a statement signing, that is proper, proper intent.

“And, to be fair, the Rennes move hasn’t worked for him, but come to Blues and meet up with the other Japanese players and I would 100 per cent take him.

“One season in the Championship and you can go do it in the Prem - I’m 100 per cent up for this signing of him.

“Bring him to the Blues. If we get that, then people need to seriously open their eyes to the Blues and the fact that we are coming.

“I am 100 per cent backing this signing, absolutely buzzing about it.”

Furuhashi joined Rennes last January, and started just one of his six league appearances, failing to register a single goal or assist in Ligue 1, but he was prolific for Celtic for three-and-a-half years prior to his switch to France..

Kyogo Furuhashi transfer could be risky and expensive for Birmingham City

Furuhashi has struggled in the French top flight, and it’s not a surprise he’s already seeking an exit despite only joining Rennes six months ago.

He enjoyed a great three-and-a-half seasons with Celtic, winning the league title each year and scoring 63 goals from 116 Premiership appearances.

While his most prolific campaign saw him register 27 goals from 38 games in the 2022/23 campaign, his impact in front of goal did start to wane in the subsequent seasons.

At 30, there is every chance he is now past his best, so this could become a risky signing for Birmingham, especially if he is awarded a big contract as part of the move.
