As Manchester City close in on the signing of James Trafford from Burnley this summer, talk about the future of Stefan Ortega is beginning to intensify.

The 31-year-old has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable second-choice stoppers since joining City from Arminia Bielefeld in 2022, regularly stepping up in key domestic and European fixtures, whilst earning plaudits for standout performances.

However, with the impending return of James Trafford and Ederson set to remain at the club for another year, Stefan Ortega’s game time could be limited more than ever in the coming campaign.

Manchester City’s decision to trigger a £27 million matching clause for Trafford suggests a changing dynamic in Pep Guardiola’s goalkeeping ranks, with the 22-year-old viewed internally as a long-term solution in the position after agreeing to a five-year deal, with an option for an additional 12 months.

While Ederson remains first-choice, and Trafford will likely begin as primary understudy, Ortega could find himself relegated to third-choice status – a position he is unlikely to accept given his ambitions to be a number one elsewhere, and having previously attracted attention from clubs across Germany and in England.

Now, according to the information of journalist Ben Jacobs and talkSPORT, Manchester City’s current back-up choice goalkeeper is attracting transfer interest from both Premier League side Burnley and Championship outfit Leicester City.

Should Ortega himself seek a departure, City are expected to sanction the move so long as a suitable offer is received, with the club keen to reward the goalkeeper’s professionalism over the past two seasons.

Burnley, who are set to lose Trafford, may see Ortega as a natural and experienced replacement – someone who could immediately offer stability following their return up to the Premier League under Scott Parker. Meanwhile, Leicester City are also exploring reinforcements as they prepare for life in England’s second tier and aim for an instant return back to the summit.

There is currently no advanced agreement in place, but talks are anticipated to accelerate once Trafford’s move is confirmed and City’s structure is finalised. Ortega has one year remaining on his current contract, and City would not stand in his way should an offer of note arrive.

As it stands, all paths seem to point toward a summer reshuffle in the Etihad goalkeeping ranks, and Ortega’s future could be resolved in the weeks that follow Trafford’s formal unveiling as Manchester City’s fifth summer signing.
