According to ESPN, Sébastien Haller’s to FC Utrecht looks unlikely. The French-Ivorian striker’s wages (30) are just too high for the current third-place Eredivisie side, no matter how they try to raise funds.

FC Utrecht hoped to create enough space for Haller’s arrival by selling Ole Romeny to Oxford United, as reported by Voetbal Primeur. However, a spectacular reunion with the goal-getter – who was loaned to CD Leganés by Borussia Dortmund this season – does not seem to be a feasible option.

Haller previously played for FC Utrecht between 2015 and 2017, scoring 52 goals in 98 games. After stints at Eintracht Frankfurt and West Ham United, he returned to the Netherlands four years ago, as Ajax’s record signing. He was crowned top scorer with 21 goals in the 2021-22 Eredivisie season, and earned himself a big move to Dortmund after two league titles.

That said, shortly after his transfer over to Germany, Haller’s career was blighted by cancer. He managed to recover in superb fashion but has only managed to find his usual high level sporadically since then. He has not managed to score a single goal in eight appearances for Leganes this term.

Now that the reunion with Haller does not seem to be happening, Utrecht coach Ron Jans will probably start the second half of the season with the same three strikers as before the winter break: David Min, Noah Ohio and Anthony Descotte.

Haller’s contract with Borussia Dortmund still runs for another year and a half, and it has already been reported that the forward has plenty of admirers – including Dinamo Zagreb.
