Liverpool’s summer transfer window is reaching fever pitch, and Trev Downey’s Friday edition of the Daily Red Podcast captured the intensity with trademark wit and detail. As the club makes bold moves in the market, with names like Florian Wirtz and Joe Gomez central to current narratives, the tone around Anfield is one of transformation and intent.
The name on every Liverpool fan’s lips is Florian Wirtz. Downey didn’t shy away from the hype, saying, “I’m aware that at any moment as I speak, the first pictures of Florian Wirtz could be dropping on the internet,” capturing the air of anticipation around the player’s arrival.
Wirtz’s transfer has been conducted with a surprising level of secrecy. “The club have seemed to do a magnificent job in shading the lad from our attention in any way, shape or form,” Downey observed. This covert approach stands in contrast to past sagas like the infamous Nabil Fekir episode, which he referenced with some scepticism.
Downey also added a humorous observation: “Apparently once this medical is done, the lad is off on holidays again – he goes on more holidays than Karl Matchett and that’s saying something.”
As Liverpool prepares to unveil Wirtz officially, Downey suggested the club is operating from a position of power: “It just feels like we’re going around drinking everyone’s milkshakes and I could not be happier about that as a reality for us as Liverpool fans.”
Amidst the noise of transfers, one voice of calm and commitment came from long-serving defender Joe Gomez. Downey highlighted a poignant message from Gomez, who marked his ten-year anniversary at Liverpool with a heartfelt social media post.
“10 years ago as a kid moving from Southeast London to Liverpool I couldn’t even imagine looking this far into the future,” Gomez wrote. “It’s been a blessing to be part of the different dressing rooms and getting to create such special memories.”
But it was his closing line that caught Downey’s attention: “‘A decade in red and still hungry to keep going.’ Now there’s no arguing with the sentiment of that last line.” For Downey, that statement was a clear signal of Gomez’s desire to remain a part of the project under Arne Slot.
Gomez’s versatility has long been praised, and Downey reaffirmed that: “He’s just a very good footballer… I still marvel at the stint he put in at left-back… you wouldn’t be surprised to see Joe doing a half-decent stint as a holding midfielder if he was asked.”
Trev also dived into the Jarell Quansah transfer situation, with Liverpool reportedly close to finalising a £35 million move to Bayer Leverkusen. “Lots of people are very torn about this,” he admitted, acknowledging the fan divide.
Downey noted the potential logic behind such a sale: “We sometimes make the mistake as Liverpool fans of potentially overrating our players,” while also suggesting that the sale might fund a move for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi.
He quoted Jamie Carragher’s view on the Palace captain: “I think he’s a really good player… I wouldn’t pay £70 million for him.” However, Downey added context that Guéhi’s contract situation means the fee is likely to drop, making a move more feasible.
From Wirtz’s imminent unveiling to Gomez’s affirmations of loyalty, and with key decisions looming on players like Quansah and Guéhi, Liverpool appear to be undergoing a significant evolution. As Downey put it, “It’s a wild time to be a Liverpool supporter, it really is.”
In a summer of churn and change, one thing is clear: Liverpool are not standing still.
