Bayern Munich went down 1-2 to Inter at Allianz Arena on Tuesday evening in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie with the Italian Serie A side.
The home side started brightly and came close to opening the scoring when Michael Olise fired just wide of the post after eight minutes.
They went even closer in the 26th minute when Michael Olise's clever pass found Harry Kane unmarked in the box, but the England international could only direct his shot onto the post.
Instead, it was Inter who took the lead in the 38th minute after a well-worked attack. Carlos Augusto's cross found Marcus Thuram, whose back-heel pass found Lautaro Martinez, who slotted home with the outside of his foot.
Martinez had another chance to get on the scoresheet again after the break, but Jonas Urbig produced a fine save to deny him on 56 minutes.
At the other end, Josip Stanisic headed over on 62 minutes, before Raphael Guerreiro's powerful volley flew just over the crossbar a few minutes later.
Bayern finally found an equaliser through second-half substitute Thomas Müller five minutes from time. Konrad Laimer's cross found the veteran at the back post and he made no mistake with his finish.
For a moment, it seemed Müller would become the hero for Bayern, just days after the announcement that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season
But Inter responded swiftly to silence the Allianz Arena crowd when Carlos Augusto's powerful cross found second-half substitute Davide Frattesi, who slotted the ball into the net to give the Italians a 2-1 win.
The return leg will take place in Milan on Wednesday next week.
