Stefan de Vrij says that Inter Milan “aren’t just playing to defend a lead” against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The Dutchman gave his thoughts in a press conference after this evening’s 3-1 Serie A victory over Cagliarri, as reported by FCInterNews.
This coming week, Inter take on Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie.
The Nerazzurri go into Wednesday’s match with a 2-1 lead from the first leg.
That means that there is only the slenderest of advantages for the Nerazzurri to protect.
That could make things a bit tricky for Inter. They will know that they don’t necessarily need to score or win – but at the same time, one Bayern goal could completely change the tie.
Therefore, Inter could feel that their best insurance would simply be to play their game and believe.
Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij insisted that against Bayern, “we won’t play a match just to defend the lead.”
“We’ll need a great match to go through to the next round,” he continued.
Meanwhile, Stefan de Vrij called today’s win over Cagliari “a very important match.”
“It was important for us to win.”
“As with last week, we went 2-0 up,” de Vrij noted. “Then at the start of the second half, we conceded a goal.”
“But then we scored again right away. And then we managed the lead.”
De Vrij also gave his thoughts on his vital block in the second half of today’s match.
“I closed off the angle at the far post to help Sommer,” said the 33-year-old. And then that’s where the ball went.”
“It was an important block. Maybe if it had been 3-2 we would have suffered more, but we managed it better.”
