While all attention is focused on today’s Premier League fixture between Manchester City and Liverpool at Anfield the January transfer window is looming in the background. The transfer market is set to open next month. It is expected that the world champions will look to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s squad in January. Based on City’s recent performances they have to. Now a new report indicates that Manchester City will have money to spend next month. The expectation is that City’s transfer budget will be utilised to strengthen Manchester City’s squad.
Pete O’Rourke has reported for Football Insider that Manchester City will have ‘massive funds’ available to spend next month. Furthermore, O’Rourke reports that the world champions are looking to revitalise their squad next month. Lastly, O’Rourke adds that injuries to Rodri and, more recently, Mateo Kovacic have forced City’s hand as they look set to enter the January transfer market.
You only have to look at Manchester City’s past six games to see that Pep Guardiola’s squad needs reinforcing. Injuries and a heavy workload on City’s fit players have pushed the world champions squad to their limit. It has resulted in a six-game winless run as everything appears to have caught up to the Manchester City squad. The need for the champions to strengthen their squad is clear to see.
But it is where City may look to strengthen their squad that is also a major topic of discussion. The need to address the concerns with City’s midfield is obvious. That has to be one of Manchester City’s main priorities next month. Sami Mokbel has previously reported for the Daily Mail that Adam Wharton and Martin Zubimendi are looming as transfer targets for Manchester City. I believe there is a case for the world champions to add two midfielders to Pep Guardiola’s squad. That would lighten the workload on City’s players and give Guardiola more options to work with.
There does also appear to be a need for Manchester City to sign a striker and potentially another right-back. However, it remains to be seen if the world champions will be that active in the January transfer window. But a rebuild is coming it’s just a matter of when they begin that process. Sam Lee has reported for the Athletic that Manchester City were set to begin their rebuilding process next summer. But the current run of form may have forced City’s hand to begin the process in a month’s time.
Manchester City look to have funds to spend next month. Based on the events of this season the expectation is that they will be utilised. They have to be if the world champions are to replenish their squad for the second half of this season.
