Manchester City are on the verge of completing their fifth signing of the summer. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Sverre Nypan is set to undergo a medical on Monday ahead of his move from Rosenberg to City. Manchester City’s imminent signing of Nypan is an exciting addition to the Manchester City set-up. He figures to be a player who could be the future of Manchester City’s midfield. But he will need time to develop as a player and fulfil his obvious potential.
Looking at Sverre Nypan as a player, he is an exceptionally gifted midfielder. At 18 years of age, he has already made 70 appearances for Rosenberg. Nypan has scored 14 goals and added 11 assists in those matches. Those numbers are exceptional for a midfielder. Especially one that is so young in Sverre Nypan’s case.
Positionally, Nypan typically plays as a number eight for Rosenberg. Playing as an eight allows the young Norwegian prodigy to play to his strengths. Given that Rosenberg typically plays with a three-man midfield, Nypan usually plays on the left-hand side of their midfield trio. He plays in an advanced role with a number six behind him. Playing in that particular role allows the best attributes of Nypan’s game to stand out.
The young midfielder is a technically gifted player. He is right-footed, so playing on the left allows him to cut inside with the ball. But he is a two-footed player, which allows him to play a wide variety of passes. There is also an intelligence to his play both in and out of possession. Nypan makes intelligent forward runs which is a skill that will serve him well in his career. The young midfielder has all of the tools to become an elite passer of the ball. For now, he is still a rough diamond in terms of his passing. But that side of his game does figure to develop as he matures as a player.
Sverre Nypan’s dribbling is a strong feature of his play. He does drive forward with the ball. With his size, Nypan stands at almost 6 feet tall, he tends to overpower his opponents. The young midfielder isn’t a Rayan Cherki-type dribbler, he is more of a powerhouse in midfield. His dribbling is another aspect of his game that isn’t fully refined, but that will come in time.
Sverre Nypan has all of the tools and attributes to become a Manchester City midfielder. However, he will need time to develop as a player. Out of possession he needs to improve as a player with his positioning. Nypan also needs to physically develop which is no surprise given that he is 18 years of age.
It has previously been reported by David Ornstein for The Athletic that Sverre Nypan is likely to spend the 25/26 season out on loan. A loan move will allow Nypan to further develop as a player. The young Norwegian midfielder needs first-team minutes to further grow as a player. He figures to get that opportunity based on David Ornstein’s report. That is a better move for Sverre Nypan’s career rather than spending time on the periphery of the Manchester City first team. A loan move will also allow Nypan to hone his craft as a player and refine the rough edges of his play.
Manchester City may have signed a player from Rosenberg who could be the future of their midfield in Sverre Nypan. The young Norwegian midfielder is one of the hottest young midfield prospects in European football. He will arrive at the Etihad with the world at his feet, If he can develop as a player out on loan this season he could play his way into Pep Guardiola’s squad sooner rather than later.
