Harvey Elliott’s future at Liverpool is under increasing scrutiny as RB Leipzig step up their efforts to sign the England youth international. According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Leipzig and Elliott are “already in advanced talks over personal terms”, and the Bundesliga side “want him” as they seek a replacement for Xavi Simons, who appears Chelsea-bound.
Having only started once in the Premier League last season, Elliott’s position under Arne Slot appears uncertain. Though he featured in 28 games, only six were from the start. Yet, despite limited opportunities, Elliott managed to register five goals and three assists — a solid return that showcases both his creativity and clinical instinct.
This leaves both club and player with a decision to make, with Elliott valued around the £50million mark. Slot, who famously led Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut season, has already overseen a number of midfield arrivals. Elliott, in his own words, is contemplating whether this congestion may “block the path” for his development.
Plettenberg’s report suggests a move may be more than speculative. Talks are progressing swiftly, and while the final structure of the deal remains undecided, the intention is clear.
“Concrete negotiations between the clubs are expected to follow once a verbal agreement is in place,” Plettenberg stated. The most eye-catching line from his update may be the simplest: “Important: Elliott is keen to join Leipzig.”
This admission puts Liverpool in a difficult position. While the club has always valued Elliott’s potential, the player’s own ambition and willingness to explore other options could accelerate a move.
The most compelling aspect of this story might be Elliott’s own words. Speaking to The Anfield Wrap during pre-season, his comments were heartfelt yet pragmatic:
“If I had it my way I would be here for the rest of my career, it’s as simple as that… but at the same time I kind of need to be selfish and see what’s best for me.”
He didn’t hold back on his ambition either:
“I have big ambitions. I want to get in the World Cup squad. I want to keep being successful as a player. It’s something I still need to review.”
It’s a mature reflection from a player clearly aware of both his potential and the limited time top-level football affords.
Liverpool now face a crucial decision. Elliott’s stock remains high and interest from Leipzig offers both a developmental opportunity and a financial incentive. Whether they allow him to leave permanently or opt for a loan solution, the club must weigh short-term squad needs against long-term value.
Slot has proven ruthless in selection, but also adaptive. If Elliott remains, he must be given genuine opportunities, not token appearances. If he departs, Liverpool must be confident they are not letting go of a future star too soon.
There’s a heartbreak brewing here, and Liverpool fans know the feeling all too well. Harvey Elliott is one of us. He wears the badge like a fan, speaks with the honesty we rarely hear, and plays with a fire that doesn’t lie.
Hearing him say he wants to stay “for the rest of my career” hits hard, especially when it’s followed by the cold reality that he “needs to be selfish”. And he’s right. We’ve seen too many young talents fade by waiting too long. Harvey has the ability to reach the top, and it’s painful to think he might have to do that somewhere else.
RB Leipzig isn’t just shopping smart. They’re seeing what we’ve always seen: a future England international, a difference-maker. We lost Diogo this summer. That void in the squad, and in our hearts, should be a reminder of how fragile everything is. Losing another fan-favourite, even to development rather than tragedy, carries its own sting.
If Elliott goes, we’ll support him. But it would be a shame to see his Anfield story paused just when it could be starting. He deserves more than bench minutes. Either give him a real role this season, or ensure the door stays open for a return.
