Liverpool’s ambitious transfer strategy this summer has left many fans thrilled, yet puzzled, none more so than Jamie Carragher. The Reds legend, never one to hold back, has voiced his scepticism over the club’s apparent willingness to spend £150million on Newcastle’s Alexander Isak — and he’s raised some uncomfortable truths in doing so.
With the Premier League champions already having splashed over £250million, and potentially rising to £400million if a move for Isak goes ahead, Carragher questioned whether this is the Liverpool way.
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate by Sky Bet, he said:“He (Isak) will be an amazing signing but from a fan’s point of view for myself, I don’t want Liverpool to spend £150m on Isak.”
Carragher, while admiring the Swedish striker’s talent, finds the logic behind the deal hard to follow.“There’s something about Liverpool buying another striker (Ekitike), and he’s backup. Something about it doesn’t feel right to me.”
This transfer window has already seen Hugo Ekitike arrive from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79million, adding to an attacking line that includes Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo. With Isak also reportedly eager to make the switch to Anfield, the picture is becoming crowded — and confusing.
“I look at Isak, and he’s obviously thrown his toys out the pram once Arsenal signed a striker and Liverpool signed a striker. It feels a bit messy to me now,” Carragher explained.“For me, when I think of Liverpool, it doesn’t look really planned.”
The former defender questioned the wisdom of investing heavily in multiple attackers, suggesting it hints at a lack of long-term vision.“I don’t think the plan is to buy a striker for £80m, and then be looking to buy another one for £120m,” he added.
Carragher didn’t hold back when he compared Isak’s £150million valuation to that of a certain French superstar.“£150million for me feels like Mbappe, you should be getting Mbappe for that amount,” he said, referencing Kylian Mbappe’s 2018 move from Monaco to PSG for £166million.
The comparison wasn’t to diminish Isak’s quality, but to question whether the fee truly reflects his value in the current market.
Not everyone sees it Carragher’s way. Fellow pundit Paul Scholes offered a different perspective, calling the move a potential statement of intent.“The ambition now is to be the best in Europe, and if you bring Isak into it, he is the best centre forward in the world at this point,” said the former Manchester United man.
He continued:“You (Carragher) say as a Liverpool fan you’d feel uncomfortable spending £120million for him. Well, as a United fan, I’d spend £150million on him.”
Scholes also pointed to the fact that Liverpool didn’t spend heavily last summer and suggested this window is simply catch-up. He applauded the mentality under Arne Slot, who guided the Reds to the title last season:“When you win the league, a lot of teams relax… Liverpool have done that [reinvested wisely].”
As Liverpool prepare to kick off the new campaign at Anfield against Bournemouth on August 15, fans will be watching closely to see if Isak does indeed join the champions. One thing is certain: the debate is far from over.
