Man Utd Eyeing Porto Striker Samu as Alternative to Top Targets

Samu Impresses Man Utd with Prolific Form

Manchester United are keeping a close watch on Porto striker Samu Aghehowa as they explore alternatives to high-priced targets Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres. As reported by GiveMeSport, “the Spain international is viewed as a viable alternative to Man Utd’s top targets like Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres.”

The 20-year-old forward has been in scintillating form, scoring 18 goals in 29 appearances this season. His talent came to the fore when he stunned United with a brace during their Europa League encounter, a performance that prompted former Red Devils midfielder Owen Hargreaves to remark how Samu “caused [Matthijs] de Ligt absolute nightmares”.

Financial Hurdles Could Complicate Deal

Samu’s potential arrival at Old Trafford is not without obstacles. As GiveMeSport notes, his €100m release clause and complex ownership structure pose challenges for United. “Atletico Madrid still retain 50 per cent of the highly-rated youngster’s rights, so they essentially have a 50 per cent sell-on clause,” the report highlights.

Although Porto can incrementally increase their share of Samu’s rights by paying €5m annually, United will still need to offer a substantial fee to ensure Porto profits, considering Atletico Madrid’s cut of any future sale.

Man Utd Weighing Options Beyond Samu

United’s interest in Samu stems from their inability to pursue marquee strikers such as Osimhen and Gyokeres, both valued between €70m and €75m. According to GiveMeSport, “both will cost in the region of €70 million to €75m, which is currently simply not affordable for Man Utd”.

Unless United offload players to fund transfers, Samu represents a more age-profiled investment, though his final price tag could still reach uncomfortable levels.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis:

For Manchester United, Samu feels like an exciting yet risky option. His Europa League performance against United proved he can compete at the highest level, and at 20 years old, he fits a profile the club has lacked in recent years—raw talent with immense potential.

However, the financial complexities cannot be ignored. With Atletico Madrid holding a 50% sell-on clause and Porto seeking a significant profit, the final cost could rival that of Osimhen or Gyokeres without the proven track record. Fans will rightly ask if such an outlay should be spent on an emerging talent rather than an established goalscorer.

United’s transfer decisions have often been marred by drawn-out negotiations, and patience among the fanbase is thin. Should the club pursue Samu, swift and decisive action is essential. Yet, with the squad needing reinforcements across multiple positions, many supporters will hope the board prioritises value and squad balance over a marquee gamble.
