AC Milan Enquire About Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez Amid Napoli Talks

Serie A Giants Circle as Liverpool Await Nunez Resolution

While Liverpool continue to reshape their squad with high-profile arrivals like Jérémie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, the future of Darwin Nunez is becoming the summer’s hottest topic. Italian journalist Matteo Moretto has now revealed that AC Milan joined Napoli in enquiring about the Uruguayan striker, further fuelling speculation surrounding his Anfield exit.

As it stands, Napoli are believed to be in pole position. “I told you exclusively how Milan was one of the clubs that asked for information on Darwin Nunez, in addition to Napoli, who is clearly ahead,” said Moretto, speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel (via MilanNews). However, the Rossoneri’s interest appears limited by financial realities.

Milan Admire, But Can’t Afford Nunez

Milan’s interest is no great surprise. The club are known to be in the market for a reliable No.9 after Zlatan Ibrahimović’s retirement and Olivier Giroud’s departure to LAFC. In Nunez, they see a player with raw potential and the explosive ability to flourish in Serie A. But according to Moretto, the price tag is likely to put them off.

“For Milan, despite a high level of approval for Nunez, in terms of costs, it is an almost impracticable path, difficult to reach,” he explained. With Nunez still under contract and commanding a sizeable fee—Liverpool signed him for an initial £64 million rising to £85 million—Milan are expected to explore more affordable options.

Napoli Talks Still Ongoing

Napoli’s pursuit of Nunez is far from concluded. Moretto notes that “De Laurentiis’ club has not yet found the basis for an agreement with Liverpool. The two clubs are discussing, but to date, there are no steps forward in this direction.”

This puts Liverpool in an interesting position. They’re under no financial pressure to sell but may choose to cash in if the deal structure meets their valuation and aligns with Arne Slot’s squad plans. With the signing of Wirtz and potential tactical reshuffles, Nunez’s future at Anfield feels increasingly tenuous.

Summer Sales Fuel Liverpool’s Rebuild

Caoimhin Kelleher’s move to Brentford and Jarell Quansah’s imminent switch to Bayer Leverkusen (reportedly worth over £30 million) have already kick-started Liverpool’s outbound business. But if Nunez goes, it would likely surpass those deals financially—and symbolically.

Slot’s project seems to favour a different forward profile, and if Napoli or Milan can pull together the funds, Nunez could be the marquee departure of Liverpool’s summer.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, Darwin Nunez’s potential departure stirs mixed emotions. There’s an understanding that his time at Anfield hasn’t matched the expectations set by his colossal transfer fee, but also a recognition of the raw chaos and excitement he brings to the pitch. Losing that unpredictability—his knack for dragging defenders wide, creating space, and generating chances from nothing—could be felt if not properly replaced.

If Arne Slot does choose to let him go, the club will need to replace him, the need for a undisputed no.9 is evident and has been since the departure of Bobby Firmino.

As for AC Milan’s interest, it’s flattering—Nunez clearly retains his reputation across Europe. But given the financial restrictions mentioned by Matteo Moretto, this seems more like a speculative glance than a serious push. It’s Napoli that Liverpool fans are watching.
