The final week of the transfer window could bring late drama for Real Madrid, with Dani Ceballos once again at the centre of speculation. According to The Athletic, “The 29-year-old midfielder has asked to leave Real Madrid — as he did last summer — and wants to explore options for a new destination as much as possible.
“In recent days, he has liked several social media posts referencing a potential return to Real Betis, and after Sunday’s match at Oviedo, he posted an Instagram story with the caption ‘the last dance’, later deleting it.”
Ceballos’ desire for a move is clear, but his situation remains complicated. Madrid’s valuation of the player has historically been a stumbling block, and it could again prevent a transfer from materialising before the deadline.

Despite the challenges, there is interest in the Spanish international. “Sources claim he has received interest from two Champions League teams, Betis, and Saudi Arabia,” reported The Athletic. Betis, his former club, have long been linked with a reunion but financial constraints have stood in the way.
Encouragingly for Ceballos, fresh developments in the last 24 hours point to interest from France, which has injected renewed optimism into his camp. Whether this results in a concrete bid remains to be seen, but the player’s intention to seek regular football away from Madrid has never been stronger.
Ceballos’ predicament reflects a wider theme at Madrid this summer. Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement, Xabi Alonso, has made a perfect start with two wins from two, but reinforcements have been minimal. “Alonso and his staff wanted more signings for this summer, but the absence of departures has made it difficult to happen,” the report stated.

Madrid remain reluctant to make hasty decisions. Even if Ceballos departs, sources close to the club doubt a replacement will arrive before the window closes. The club’s stance is cautious, prioritising long-term planning over short-term reactions.
While Ceballos dominates headlines, Rodrygo’s role also attracts attention. Several Premier League clubs have monitored the Brazilian this summer, though the player has not actively sought a move. Starting on the left wing in the 3-0 win over Oviedo suggests Alonso still sees him as integral. However, as The Athletic noted, “You always have to be prepared for changes.”
For Madrid, that readiness may soon be tested if Ceballos pushes harder for a transfer and a tempting offer arrives.
For Real Madrid fans, the situation with Dani Ceballos feels familiar and somewhat frustrating. He has been a loyal servant in recent years, often stepping up in rotations, yet his desire for a bigger role elsewhere is understandable at 29. With talents like Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde cementing their places, opportunities for Ceballos will only diminish.
A return to Betis would resonate emotionally for many supporters, given his roots, but finances may make that difficult. Interest from France could provide a solution, though Madrid’s valuation could still complicate negotiations.
The question is whether Madrid should hold firm or allow a departure that helps balance the wage bill. Fans will likely accept his exit if it means progress for both parties, though frustration could grow if the club fails to reinvest in depth, particularly with a long season ahead.
Rodrygo’s situation adds intrigue, but most Madridistas expect him to stay. Ultimately, this window underscores how departures, or the lack thereof, shape Madrid’s ability to refresh the squad. For now, Ceballos’ Instagram caption, “the last dance”, feels like a poignant sign-off to his chapter at the Bernabéu.
