Atlético Madrid Turn Away from Robertson to Close in on Ruggeri Deal

Ruggeri Set for Atlético Move After Robertson U-Turn

Atlético Madrid have reportedly dropped their interest in Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and are instead closing in on Atalanta full-back Matteo Ruggeri, according to a recent ESPN report by Matteo Moretto.

Despite previous discussions suggesting that Robertson “had already agreed to a transfer to Spain,” the Spanish giants have now shifted focus. A source told ESPN that negotiations with Atalanta are progressing swiftly, with the Ruggeri deal expected to be completed in the coming days.

The 22-year-old Italian left-back has quietly built an impressive CV in Serie A. Ruggeri has made 99 league appearances for Atalanta, tallying nine assists. His performances have also earned him 16 caps with Italy’s U21s, with his most recent appearance coming during their run to the quarter finals at the U21 Euros in Slovakia.

Atlético’s Tactical Shift in the Transfer Market

While Robertson, 30, would have brought immediate experience and leadership to Atlético’s back line, Ruggeri presents a more long-term solution. ESPN reports that Diego Simeone’s side had also considered Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne, but after “further consideration,” they are committed to Ruggeri as their top left-back target.

Robertson’s Future Still Firmly at Anfield?

The suggestion that Robertson was close to leaving Liverpool is a surprising twist in itself. The Scotland captain has been an ever-present figure under both Jürgen Klopp and, more recently, Arne Slot. While his age and injury record may have prompted some speculation, it’ll be interesting to see if the Scotland captain is linked with another move, as Liverpool announced Milos Kerkez today.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

For Liverpool supporters, the initial link between Andy Robertson and Atlético Madrid was always going to spark concern. He’s been a cornerstone of the club’s modern success, combining relentless energy with leadership and consistency. The report from ESPN that Robertson had “already agreed to a transfer to Spain” might have raised eyebrows, but in truth, it would’ve been sad to see Robertson go, however there is still a long time left in the window if Robbo is wanting a move.

There is also a sense of pragmatism. While Robertson remains a key figure, fans acknowledge that Liverpool must evolve the squad, with the arrival of Kerkez the left back position might be locked down for the long term.
