If a recent report from The Times (as quoted by The Scottish Sun) is believed to be true, Rangers are weighing up a summer swoop for Owen Beck. The Liverpool youngster has been on Celtic’s radar for quite some time; however, their Old Firm rivals have now made their move for the in-demand left fullback.

But the Gers are not alone in the hunt, with Wrexham, his hometown outfit, also keen on having him on a season-long loan. He impressed last season at Blackburn Rovers, and his experience at Ewood Park would be crucial in Wrexham’s battle to keep their Championship status.

The 22-year-old Wales youth international had his stints with Flint Town United, Tranmere Rovers and Stoke City before being roped in by the Merseysiders. After a couple of League Cup appearances under Jurgen Klopp, Beck was loaned out for regular game time for the 2022-23 season.

Although his minutes were limited at Bolton Wanderers, the Welshman flourished at Dundee in the following campaign. The Hoops attempted to rope in last summer, but the Reds opted to send him to the Riverside in their bid to claim a Premier League return. Blackburn narrowly missed out on a playoff place finish, and Beck, despite being their first-choice left-back till January, endured a double whammy due to successive hamstring strains. His season ended prematurely as he could not help them get over the line in the ‘top six’ race.

Why Rangers Can Afford The Liverpool Defender

Yet the young defender has a sizable list of suitors, including Rangers. He offers a balance between defence and attack, and Russell Martin, the Light Blues boss, considers him a part of his project at Ibrox. The Andrew Cavenagh-led 49ers Enterprises takeover would see an injection of £20m for transfer activities. Also, Hamza Igamane’s potential move to Lille should further bolster the Gers’ summer funds for squad rebuild.

Beck is rated highly by the Premier League champions, but the arrival of Milos Kerkez has jeopardised his Anfield future. They should listen to offers for the Wales youth international, and the rumours of Ridvan Yilmaz’s return to Besiktas explain Rangers’ interest in the fullback.

While they have Jefte down the left, the Turkish star never settled in at Ibrox due to persistent fitness problems. Beck is expected to challenge and cover the Brazilian, and could eventually secure the starting spot for his ball-playing ability, overlapping runs, crosses and cut-insides from the flank. Martin requires depth and quality across the pitch ahead of their Champions League qualifiers, and the signing of Beck must be viewed as a statement of intent by the Glasgow giants.
